About Ruben
I started teaching at a renowned music store for acoustic guitars in 1988. I soon became a favorite teacher expanding my lessons to bass and voice coaching/instruction.
I have extensive training in performance psychology. In fact I have a meditation exercise that include affirmations that were created with the assistance of Dr. Don Greene, a reknown psychologist who trains Olympic divers and professional musicians like myself.
I'm also trained in many musical styles. Jazz, Classical, and have extensive study in Pop, Rock, Metal, Blueegrass, Country, Brazilian Jazz, and Latin/Flamenc/Salsa music.

Evaluation. I see where the student is in their level. Have they had music in their background? Are they completely new to music education? Once I see where the student is, I devise a plan to help them reach their goals.
Beginner to advanced. Some of my old students are now working professionals.
Ask lots of questions.
I recently finished a round of lessons as a volunteer teacher for Guitars for Vets, a program to help veterans who experienced physical and emotional injury from serving our country. It's part of my philosophy to give back to the community.

Ruben is a super chill guy who clearly knows what he’s doing. I never felt embarrassed if I couldn’t do something, Ruben was always quick to help me learn and made things easy to understand. During lessons Ruben taught me scales, keys, alternate picking, and similar things that are essential to really knowing how to play your instrument. But he mainly taught me songs that I was really interested in learning, which other teachers had never done with me before. This really helped me learn a TON, not just about the music I liked, but music theory as well. I had lessons with Ruben years ago, and we are still friends, and I know that I can still ask him for help with something if I need it. Great guy, great lessons.
