Before the first tutoring session, I like to speak with the student for about 15-20 minutes and ask a few questions about their favorite subject in school, if they have any favorite extracurriculur activities, their attitudes/thoughts about the subject of history and how (or if) they take notes. I also ask the student to pinpoint where they think the specific challenge is in the subject is for them. This quick Q&A process helps both of us get on the same page even before the first tutoring session, but it is important for the student to know that our initial goals can always shift according to their current needs or challenges.
