About Danna

I have ridden and trained horses the majority of my life at every level including World Championships! Barrel racing is my passion, but I also have trained, shown and taught halter, showmanship, western pleasure, lunge line, and trail in hand at every level. I'm retired from Texas A&M and choose to teach riding lessons to those just beginning, as well as those who want to improve in certain areas. No matter what your goal is - I can help you accomplish it. Maybe you want to improve your communication with your horse.... overcome anxiety following an incident..... or maybe you are a seasoned competitor wanting to improve your performance...... we can do it!

I have a very different training approach than most trainers. I see it day in and day out.... you send your horse to the trainers.... everything is great! Then you get your horses home and everything falls apart. That's because YOU and your horse need to be taught/coached together. When you learn together with your horse - the possibilities are endless.

Horses are my heart and soul! I love helping people develop skills which allows them to be a better equestrian. I believe the best thing for someone's "insides" is the "backside" of a horse.

My very best horse was Apache.... a grade gelding with a huge heart. We grew up together - teaching each other as we went. I got him when he was 6 months old and buried him when he was almost 39 yrs old. He was a little horse with a huge heart and won me more than any horse I've ever ridden!

I began working at a horse training facility at the age of 12.   As I proved my ability to the owner, I began teaching lessons on Saturdays.  I have always had horses brought to me for training and I always worked with their owners to ensure a good relationship between horse and rider.  In 2000 I really began focusing more on teaching and coaching and less on actual training (due to surgery).  I do still ride and compete but not like I did years ago.   I am retired from Texas A&M and do this because it's my passion!   Horses will always be part of my soul and I enjoy meeting. Ew people and helping them achieve their goals or dreams..... so this for me is the perfect solution!

I have 35+ years of owning, training, & exhibiting horses at every level - local, state, regional, congress and world championships!!  Although I judge all classes, I chose to only teach and coach specific ones.  I love working with people of all ages, but find it personally rewarding teaching young people.  I know first hand how much a horse can mean to a child.... it's a bind like no other.   Some of my proudest moments are: when an 8 yr old boy and his yearling gelding places 3rd in youth halter at the world level.   A 14 year old young man and his yearlong filly we're reserve champion at the world futurity!   A 6 year old girl and her 9 yr old gelding won the year end hi point award her first year of riding and competing!   A 51 year old lady who have never ridden won her AQHA NOVICE Western pleasure class the first time she showed!   She also placed in halter, showmanship and trail!   These are just a few that are special to me.
The knowledge I've gained from years of competition as well as the seminars and learning programs I have attended, can definitely benefit others in every aspect of horse ownership and becoming a better equestrian.

I teach individual as well as groups of up to 5 students.  Everyone has different comfort levels and each person has their own reason for wanting to ride so student groups must all be around the name skill level.
SAFETY is my #1 priority!   In my initial evaluation, I will observe the student interacting with their horse in several different ways.  I want to see them catch their horse, halter and lead the horse through a gate, and groom their horse.  If no problems are noted, student will saddle and bridle their horse and begin riding.  A mini obstacle course will be used to show how the student approaches each and how they respond to their horses action.
Observing someone initially tells me a lot about their knowledge and skill level.   Horse ownership is a style of life with so many benefits!  Owning and caring for a horse is a huge responsibility.  You need to know how to care for your horse in every way.... it's not just about saddling up to ride!
I tell my students that your never too young or to old to chase a dream.  Reach for the moon - you might find your a shining star!!!

Make sure the person you choose is qualified!   Just because someone has "ridden" a horse doesn't make them qualified to instruct anyone.  Safety must be first ALWAYS!   A 1200 pound horse can injure or kill a person in a heartbeat if someone doesn't know what they are doing or how to react if a problem should arise.

My initial evaluation rate is $75-$100, as I really want to have the time to observe the student and horse in different ways and answer any questions the student may have.

Regular sessions are normally $50/hr, $65/1.5 hrs and 85.00/2 hrs     I start my mileage as I leave my home and travel the shortest distance to you  the first 25 miles are no charge.  Anything over 25 miles is charged at .48/mile
