About Denise
Denise Fleming is an intuitive artist that focuses on figurative surrealism, fashion illustration as well as, upcycling mannequins creating distinct designs for both residential and commercial spaces.
Denise studied fashion design in the 1990s in Vancouver, Canada. She established a small private couture business (Zuzanna) focusing on evening wear and feminine business attire. Additionally, Denise was the chief costume designer at Edmonton’s Walterdale Theater for numerous productions.
Denise taught Fashion Illustration at Old's College, Grant McEwan Community College and Edmonton Public School Board.
When she turned 50, Denise moved from Canada to be with her husband in Austin TX and decided to pick up the pencil and brush. She has been drawing, painting, and creating since.
Many of Denise’s images are women with big eyes, long necks and small mouths. The large eyes express the feminine psyche, that allows women to see and experience both extreme beauty and pain. The long necks represent how women must hold their heads high above the circumstances they live within. Small mouths represent the lack of ability, to speak out against injustice and for equality they experience using wisdom to choose their words carefully as to not jeopardize their lives.
Why upcycled mannequins? These lonely forgotten blank and broken figures are rescued from the isolation of dumpsters, alley ways and warehouse back rooms. Denise moves these beautiful forms from garbage to sculpture and functional art giving them purpose, personality, and voice.
