About Jakob
Hi! My name is Jakob Behrendt. I am currently a student at The Ohio State University studying engineering. I tutored as a volunteer at my high school for over 2.5 years. I also am an active mathematics OSU tutor as well as a private mathematics tutor. While tutoring at OSU, I gained valuable professional development skills to improve my teaching skills.
I tutor in mathematic subjects in grades K-12 as well as college math class such as calculus and algebra.
I believe no student I am tutoring should feel insignificant, not smart, put down, or not good enough. I like providing plenty examples and I make sure the mathematics foundation is in place to ensure future math courses will become easier for the student.
I love helping people. Tutoring allows me to reach out to people who need extra help and then give them the precise help they need.
I was asked to tutor a few underclass students during my high school years. I was hesitant at first, but quickly learned I love teaching. I immensely enjoy helping people and seeing a progression in a student's learning. I realized a lot of students have experiences where they feel like they are dumb or not smart enough to be in a class. Students have told me other tutors treat them this way. This upset me and pushed me to make sure that every student I tutor will feel connected with my and at ease while learning.
I just finished my first year of college.
I have take the following math classes at OSU:
Calculus 2, Calculus 3, Intro Statistics, and Linear Algebra
While in high school I took both AP AB Calculus and AP BC Calculus (receiving a 4 on AB and a 5 on BC).
I had almost a full semester of tutoring training in the Fall of 2019. This involved professional development as well practicing tutoring scenarios.

Discuss the class or subject that the student needs help with and then progress to discussing availability.
I have worked with middle school, high school, and college students. I have tutored dozens of people privately as well as countless people through my mathematics OSU job.
I would tell a student to look for someone that is honest, caring, passionate, and someone who wants their students to succeed.
I recently helped a student prepare for a Calculus test. He was unsure on the material and worried he wouldn't pass the class for the second time. He later texted me and told me he passed the test with flying colors and was so glad that he had reached out to me for help.
A few things worth thinking about before reaching out
Students should consider the level of help they think they need. They should consider if they are truly willing to put in the extra work to do well. They should also feel 100% confident that they can express their concerns to their teacher when needed.
