About Jonathon
Jon and Hannah were teachers in the Peace Corps in Lesotho, Africa. Jon has a degree in engineering and taught math and physics at an all-girls high school. Hannah has a degree in communications and taught English at an elementary school.
After living in Africa for two years, they are back stateside and are searching for jobs. In the meantime, they are using their Peace Corps training and experience to help kids in the USA.
Jon focuses on a hands-on or tangible approach to learning math. By channeling his engineering experience and various hobbies, he strives to make math more than symbols, numbers and variables. That's how kids almost always want to learn, and thats the best way to teach them.
A project that Jon is most proud of is the Morija Girls Rocket Program. It is an after-school club that Jon founded in Africa during his Peace Corps service. The goal is to teach girls math in an exciting visible way through designing a liquid-fueled rocket engine. Learn more here: (concealed information)
I enjoy being able to help kids learn about math and science. I like to help kids understand, not only how to do math, but why they'll need math.
To prepare for teaching in the Peace Corps, I began tutoring homeschooled kids in math.
Later, I served as a teacher in the Peace Corps. I became more comfortable teaching and found my teaching style in Africa.
After getting a bachelor's degree, I gained professional experience in design engineering.
A little over two years ago, my wife and I joined the Peace Corps where I taught math and physics at an all-girls high school in Lesotho, Africa.

I'd want to get to know them a little bit. I'd like to know what their hobbies are and what they wanted to do for work someday.
After getting to know them, I would like to know what topics they are expected to cover.
Finally, I will make a plan. I will do my best to connect their math to their hobbies or future job.
I have worked with 8th to 12th grade students. In the past two years, I have taught hundreds of different students, so I have experience teaching many different personality types.
Try to find a tutor you "vibe" with. People have different personalities -- including tutors and students. A tutor's personality might affect their approach to teaching.
