About MacKenzie

This year, I will finish my undergraduate degree in Biology at University of British Columbia. Throughout university I have taken many biolgoy, chemistry and math classes, loving nearly all of them. After graduating, I plan on starting my teaching degree to become a high school science teacher. Tutoring is a way of sharing my passion for education and the sciences before becoming a teacher.

I started tutoring reading and writing as a Freshman in high school. A year later I also started tutoring in math. In total, I have over four years of tutoring experience. Personally, I learn by reading, writing and practicing. As a tutor, I believe I offer the most value by helping students hone their problem solving skills through practice problems, discussion and hands on engagement with the material.

I started volunteering in a reading and writing tutoring program while I was in high school. This quickly progressed to working as a paid math tutor and then starting my own math tutoring program.

My biology degree has developed an advanced level of understanding of math and sciences. It has also fostered a deep passion for these subjects, a passion that I am excited to share with others through hands on learning.

I start by getting to know one another. Students learn much better if they are comfortable around the person they are learning from. Then, I ask them to teach me some of the material they have been learning recently to help me gauge their knowledge gaps. Then, we go through practice problems focused on knowledge gaps. During these practice problems I alternate between teaching and encouraging the student's problem solving abilities. Finally, I ask the student to teach me what they learned to reinforce the new content.

I have worked with all ages of students, from elementary school up through university.

I would recommend that you look closely at your teacher. How do they learn? How do you learn? Are the two learning styles compatible? Are they patient, understanding, and available? Are they excited about the course material?

A few things worth thinking about before reaching out
Students struggle for a variety of reasons. Some students only need more practice than the teachers provide. Other students are having a hard time learning because their learning style is not compatible with the way the teacher teaches; an example of this would be a student who learns by reading but the teacher does not provide a textbook or reading materials. Some students might struggle because they did not build up an adaquate knowledge foundation in previous years.

I believe it is important to identify the source of the problem in order to move forward. Students can help by thinking through why they are struggling in their classes and clearly communicating the challenges they feel to their teacher. Once we understand why the student is struggling we can give them the tools to learn moving forward--not just in this one class or subject but in all classes and subjects moving forward.
