About Daniel

I'm Michigan State Graduate B.S. in computer science. I have tutored several students while at college, specifically helping them with their programming and calculus classes. I do a good deal of programming on my own and would love the opportunity to share my knowledge with prospective coding students.

Often times students are led to believe that they aren't capable of solving the problems they are given at school or in class. What I love is engaging with students one on one, showing them just how much potential they really have and seeing them meet their academic challenges head on.

Having gone through much of the school system myself in recent years I would always notice that there was a disconnect in what the teacher thought a students difficulties were and what a student was actually struggling with. Being a student myself, whenever a student asked a question and the teacher misinterpreted the students confusion I would always to my best to bridge the gap in communication between the student and the teacher allowing the teacher to better understand the student's confusion and address it. With this knowledge I was always able to help students solidify their understanding and many of them really appreciated my approached to teaching so I thought I'd give it a shot as a tutor

I have tutored students at both the highschool I attended and at my own university. Usually these were either classmates of mine who wanted the extra help, and needed something more personal than just a help room. I also have experience teaching small group programming classes through Code With Us

When meeting a new student I first want to see what exactly the student is struggling with and I will ask what the student thinks will help them the most, whether it be helping with homework or studying for a test. If the student's suggestion works for them then I will focus on that with them for as long as they need it. If the student does not know how they would feel most helped I will start by doing some homework with the student to identify if they know the material but are stuggling to apply it practically in the homework or if there is a gap in their understanding of the material, in which case my sessions would be more of a supplementary lecture, tailored specifically to the students needs, where I go through the material with the student while providing additional examples so they can better grasp the conscepts.

I have mainly worked with highschool and college students. I have very few experience with younger students but would be ready to work with them if I needed to.

A few things worth thinking about before reaching out
I would say students should examine what it is they are struggling with. Is it a lack of understanding of the material as a whole, or do they understand the material but they are struggling in knowing how to apply it to homework/assignments/tests. Being able to tell a teacher which specific aspect of learning is causing difficulty is a great for allowing a teacher to create a system for helping a student in the most effective way. If a student does not know what would be the most helpful a great teacher is one who can spend some time with a student and identify their points of confusion.
