About Shannon
I am a college student majoring in Human Development, minoring in Psychology. I have taken courses on teaching techniques, but am not a certified teacher. I have been a successful student and have frequently volunteered with students/in schools to help with school and homework. I am passionate about working with kids, and helping them find learning fun and enjoyable. My experience started in high school when I volutneered for 2 years in a kindgergarten classroom to help with math and spelling. Throughout college I have nannying for many school-age children and have often helped them with various subjects, especially reading, writing, and math. I got a 4.0 in highschool and currently maintain a 3.8 in college, and throughout school I have helped my peers with their work in all subjects. If your child just needs a little extra support and guidance, if they are bored and frusterated with difficult subjects, or if they need some more repetition and patience when learning something new, then I would definitely be able to help. For older kids, I have spent a lot of time writing and peer reviewing throughout college and am confident in my ability to help review essays, assist with grammar/structure/and professionalism.
Much of my schooling revolves around how to work with kids, how kids grow and develop, and how to create an environment in which they can learn easily. I have worked with kids as both a nanny (6+ years) and as a camp counselor (3 years). I have no formal teaching education, but a lot of experience with helping kids learn.

First I like to get to know a student, find out their learning style, and ask about what they are finding difficult in school. then I like to familiarize myself with the type of assignments or topics that the student is struggling with. Finally I like to set some goals with the student, and find out in their words what they are hoping to get out of tutoring.
Once we have gone over that, I will begin a short session with them to see firsthand how they work through their problems. From there, I can start to assist them and plan out where we might need to go next in order for them to improve.
I have worked with kindergarten through middle school aged children as a volunteer tutor; and when I was in high school and college I often helped my peers with their school work.
