About Ethan

My high school was project-based which resulted in quite a bit of collaboration with my peers. I often was able to step up and help my peers with their math projects and more. My experience in tutoring has enabled me to make an approach that changes for each student so that everyone I tutor gets the help that fits how they learn. Using these methods I was able to give students their first A's in their math classes.

My favorite part about tutoring is when I am able to see the student's shift to understanding the content and becoming more confident in their work. When I see students start to love math and have fun doing it, it makes me happy to know that I have changed their perspective and how they approach the subject.

I was first approached by one of my old high school math teachers who asked if I would be able to help one of her students outside of class. When I was in her class I helped my classmates a lot when they were having trouble so she thought that I would be able to help tutor her other students. I started tutoring the students in her pre-calculus class and developed a love for helping people understand math.

When I first get a new student the thing I focus on the most is figuring out how they learn best. If I can see how they learn then I can support them to the best of my ability and teach them. I usually work through problems trying to make sure the student doesn't just know the answer but know why something is the answer so they can learn how to apply their knowledge to other problems.

I have worked with both high school students and elementary school students so I have a good variety. The high schoolers that I have helped oftentimes had troubles with the basics which made it so that they could not understand the more difficult concepts in pre-calculus and algebra 2 such as logarithms and polynomial equations.

I would say the most important thing is to find someone who can teach in a way that you can learn. All students are different and have different ways of learning. A method of teaching for one student might not work for another which is a very big problem in the school system. Because of this, I would say that the most important thing a student could look for is a teacher that can help them in a way that works for them.

One of the high school students I was tutoring had a lot of trouble in math class and had never been able to get an A before. I started tutoring him and I was able to help him develop a deeper understanding of math and help him discover what way of learning math works for him. I remember when he got his first 100% on a math test and he started to actually enjoy math, it is one of the most fulfilling things I have ever done.

A few things worth thinking about before reaching out
I believe that some of the most important questions to think through are along the lines of, what do you think you is the root of any trouble you may have with math? Is it an issue with confidence, social pressures or just not being able to understand something. Once the teacher knows this then they can address those issues and help improve the student's understanding and confidence.
