About Jonathan
Mindful Music Instruction by Jonathan Flowers offers patient personalized instruction in piano, voice, and music theory and composition. I teach all ages including children, teens and adults, and all levels from beginning to advanced and professional. My approach is unique because lessons include mindfulness activities to help students cultivate mental focus, relaxation, and creativity. I also share the stories about the music and composers to enhance my students' appreciation and critical understanding of the music they play. I have music degrees from Yale University and The Eastman School of Music.
I teach in person in my studio and online. I am a leader in the field of online instruction and have taught workshops, training other teachers to teach online. I use an advanced setup that simulates the personalization of a live lesson. I employ multiple cameras to provide overhead and side views demonstrations, as well as a document camera to display sheet music. My studio features high-quality microphones and acoustic treatment to ensure you receive excellent sound from me.
I don't just teach music, I teach students. Every student's learning process is unique. From teaching such a wide variety of ages and experience levels, I have learned many different ways to teach to students' individual needs. I love how the study of music enhances my students' lives by helping them to harmonize their minds, bodies, and hearts.
Before opening my studio, Mindful Music, LLC, I taught chorus and music theory at three leading high schools in New Jersey for over a decade. I also have taught at the Indiana University School of Music as a graduate fellow.
I have a BA magna cum laude in music from Yale University and and M.A. from the Eastman School Of Music. Before opening my private teaching studio, I directed award-winning choirs and taught music theory at three leading high schools in New Jersey. In addition to teaching, I am a published composer, I perform actively as a pianist and accompanist, and I write and lecture about mindfulness in music education.

I begin each lesson with a short mindfulness activity such as deep breathing to help students establish a peaceful, focused mental state. We then commence with some technical exercises before reviewing assigned repertoire. I also include music theory and appreciation so that my students will understand the stories behind the music they are studying. During the lesson, I help the student to develop a game plan for practicing each assignment so that they can be their own teacher during the week.
I teach students ranging in age from 5 years through adult senior citizens. My current clientele is divided evenly between children, teens, and adults. It doesn't matter is your goal is to play for private enjoyment, to play recitals, or pursue music in college or professionally. I adapt my teaching approach to meet the needs of each student so they can discover the musicians they are meant to be.
Look for a teacher who:
1. Asks about your musical interests and goals and demonstrates understanding of them
2. Proposes how he/she will adapt instruction to your needs,
3. who has excellent educational and professional credentials
4. who gives feedback that is clear and helpful to you
5. who has a personality that is friendly but also inspires you to do your best.
My students recently performed a recital in Philadelphia in a hall with a beautiful Steinway concert grand piano. The ages of the pianists and vocalists ranged from age 6 through adult. I was particularly proud to include performances of parents with their children. It was such a joy to return to live performances again!

Perfect! Jonathan is an excellent and highly knowledgeable teacher, and he immediately determined the areas where I needed the most work after assessing my skill set. I had played for decades, but developed only a very shallow understanding of notation, nuance, dynamics, and pedaling. Within a couple years, my technique and interest level in all things related to the piano increased dramatically. A great attribute of his program is the use of online lessons, which Jonathan refined during the Covid lockdowns - although skeptical at first, I found that the lessons through Zoom were almost as beneficial as actually being in his studio. He has developed unique teaching tools and applies them very effectively. Highly recommended for all levels of piano students. Bill P.
