About Wesley

I have been steeped in music and piano scholarship from the moment I was born. My mother is an accomplished pianist herself, and so I was raised in a household where the virtues of music were rivaled by none. I learned how to read a piano score at the age of three, before I could read any other language.

I recognize that technique is the bedrock of all good performance, but is the intangible human qualities that are so beautifully unique to each one of us that produce music. I have the utmost respect for everyone who takes the time to make music a part of their lives, and I believe that it is through developing a positive connection between teacher and student that best allows artistry and musicality to flourish.

I love to be amazed, in the way that I am consistently amazed, by the technical and spiritual growth that inevitably occurs when someone invites music into their life. Music has such incredible potential to enrich and fulfill our experiences on this earth, and it has always been an honor for me to be a facilitator in bringing that to my students.

My mother is a piano teacher herself, and so I found myself seated at our piano for the first time at the ripe age of three.  I trained formally for 15 years, and continued to practice on my own through college.  Additionally, I studied cello for nine years and had the honor of being first chair in a number of competitive orchestras.

I began teaching piano and cello privately in high school and continued in college.  I have also worked as a music coach for the Winchester Community Music School during their summer chamber music festivals.

I like to start out with an interview session, during which the student and I are able to get to know each other.  I take this time to better assess the student's skill level, and to develop a more thorough understanding of what the student hopes to achieve with my help.  With beginners, I'll recommend certain exercise books and such that I think will best aid them in getting started on their musical journey.  With students with a little more experience, I'll try to meet them wherever they are on their journey and build on top of their training.
