About Miriam

Studio Philosophy

I believe students learn best in a positive and encouraging environment, and that is the founding philosophy behind every lesson I teach. I love teaching music, and I enjoy helping students find the best in themselves.

Here is some information about me that you may find helpful:

Education

I graduated summa cum laude from Brigham Young University with a Bachelor of Music in Music Education. I was accepted into and studied in both BYU's prestigious piano studio and vocal studio, a rare accomplishment.

Piano Experience

I have played piano for 18 years, I started teaching lessons 13 years ago, and I have taught over 40 students. My piano performance achievements include receiving solo and ensemble trophies from the National Federation of Music Clubs, earning Superior *** ratings (highest possible) at festivals, competing in concerto competitions, and performing solo piano in BYU's De Jong Concert Hall for Debussy/Ravel: An Anniversary Celebration. I have a wide range of accompanist experience, and have accompanied vocalists, instrumentalists, and choirs in many settings, including during a live performance on KBYU TV. My teachers include Richard Anderson (BYU piano studio), Robin Hancock (BYU piano studio), Tonia Stimpson Lundberg (BYU grad), and Carol Cherry (Provo Piano Academy).

Vocal Experience

I just finished my BA in Music Education from BYU with voice as my primary instrument, and have been training my voice intensely for the past 4 years. I have given many private vocal coaching sessions in genres ranging from musical theater to worship to classical. I have sung with BYU Opera Chorus, BYU Concert Choir, BYU Women's Chorus (section leader and vice president), and BYU University Chorale (section leader). I have also served as assistant director of the BYU Welsh Choir and BYU Asian Choir, and have student taught with Sunset View Elementary Choir, Springville Junior High Master Singers, and Maple Mountain High School Choirs. Favorite opera/musical theater roles include a gypsy girl in Carmen, a voyager in Manon, a cousin in Savior of the World, and Mary Fielding Smith in The Nauvoo Pageant. I look forward to appearing next in Utah Vocal Arts Academy's Don Giovanni and The Merry Widow. My teachers include Lawrence Vincent (BYU voice studio), Mindy Ammons (BYU voice studio), and Elise Read Anderson (BYU grad).

Music Theory Experience

I received straight As in all my college music theory core courses and tested out of the most difficult level of ear training. I taught AP Music Theory at Maple Mountain High School as part of my student teaching, and I loved finding innovative ways of teaching that helped the students have fun and understand the principles in new ways. In my spare time I love writing music and I recently completed a choral mass.

Hopefully you have found this information helpful! Feel free to contact me for more information.

A friend asked my sister and me to teach her children while their regular piano teacher was gone for the summer. We did, and when the students' regular teacher returned at the end of the summer they chose to stay with us. Word spread, and our studio grew. My sister no longer teaches as she is busy pursuing a master's degree at BYU, but I have chosen music education as my profession.

I graduated summa cum laude from BYU with a degree in Music Education. I have taught music for over 15 years.

When I first meet a new student, I ask them about their past musical experience, look at any method books or other music they have been using, and invite them to play or sing something for me so I get an idea of where they are in the learning process. I then create a personal plan with them of where to go from there and recommend any books or sheet music they need to purchase before the next lesson. If the student is new to music entirely, I spend the time introducing them to their instrument and help them select the music they need to purchase before the next lesson.

I have worked with students ages 5-adult and skill levels beginner to early advanced. I have experience teaching students with various developmental disorders and have helped each progress at an individual pace.

I would recommend you determine what your goals are and find a teacher who will help you move toward those goals and will work at the pace you are comfortable with. If you love music, are willing to practice and work hard, and want a positive experience developing your musical abilities, I am a good candidate for you. If you are not interested in practicing regularly and want a laid-back experience with low expectations, I would not be the best option for you and you will want to look for a teacher in your community who has low expectations. If you are very serious about music and are interested in pursuing a musical career, I can start you on that path, and in your mid/late teens I will encourage you to begin training with a college professor or current grad student to help with the transition. I would also recommend you look for a teacher with a disposition that will work well for you. If you do well with someone positive and encouraging, I am a good candidate for you. If you do better with someone strict and severe, I am not the best option for you.
