About Jim
The ability to express oneself musically -- to spontaneously compose - has been one of the great joys of my life. It is a gift, yet it is attainable through a combination of practice, immersion in the masters, and a working knowledge of chord progressions and how they relate to the song.
With an intermediate grasp of your instrument, and the willingness commit to daily practice, you can be improvising as soon as your first lesson.
Jazz is about self expression, but it is also about communication - communication to listeners, but more importantly, communication and interaction within a band. To be able to 'converse' requires a combination of a thorough knowledge of harmony, intensive study of the masters, and good old fashioned practice.
As someone who has studied, played, and taught this music for over 10 years I am able to impart my knowledge in a way that is clear, consist, and passionate. I believe that in order to play this music well one must have an understanding and appreciation of the masters. This understanding, combined with the fundamentals of harmony are key.
