About Josh
6 years as a trumpeter, member of Grissom High School band and participant in a special UAH brass ensemble event
I was a student with a late start in lessons, and I just wasn't up to my band program's standards. I quit for a long while, but eventually my love for music found me again. Now I'm more enthusiastic than ever, and I understand failure and motivation problems more than most. So if you've just bought your first horn, you've got that big audition coming up, or you just feel like you've lost touch, go ahead and give me a call.
In this time we live in, with wars and pollution and pandemics, I'm always thankful for the chance to give students a break from it all.
During my time as a band student, I would sometimes be assigned to work with newcomers and get them up to speed. I discovered a love for helping newer players reach their potential, and that love has never left.

1. Have the student play a few scales, long tones, or a simple song or two to establish a baseline.
2. Unless we need to address any major technical issues, select the appropriate book and begin the listed curriculum with changes where necessary.
3. Begin assigning 'homework' within the book to prepare between lessons and work with me on lesson days. Can be mixed with band or audition music if need be.
Mainly students at or just below my level. It's helpful to not be too far removed from the student's problems.
Always look for a good bit of experience, but especially when starting out, try to find someone who is on the greener side. They will remember the problems you may have, and are likely to be more patient with you.
Back over Christmas, I passed a street trumpet/trombone duo that was absolutely belting out the Sesame Street theme song. I remember seeing how much fun they were having, and how pure and free the sound was, and it reminded me that I love what I do.
A few things worth thinking about before reaching out
I'm of the opinion that if you're not sure, you should ask. Personally, I had been playing for 2 years before I found out I was doing it all wrong, and correcting it after all that time was a nightmare. It's always best to catch problems and concerns early on.
