My methodology is based around solid technique and a good understanding of music expression. Curiosity is a key virtue I look for in my students and I encourage my students to be inquisitive at all times. I aim to nurture an environment which is based around exploration and problem solving where it is okay to make mistakes, learn and grow from them. Learning a new skill is challenging, so perseverance and determination are vital.
Typically a lesson will begin with a warm up. For younger students this may be a musical game and for older students this is more likely to be a technical exercise that broadens their skills. After this we will explore by working on a peice. I believe that self analysis and problem solving are vital skills when learning a new skill so the first thing I will ask a student is for their opinions on their performance -- Two things that worked well and two things we can work on. I do a great deal of demonstration to encourage my students to listen with a critical yet constructive ear.
I am based in Blackheath and teach in and around South and Central London - areas such as South Kensington, Lancaster gate, Chelsea, Notting Hill, City of London, Clapham, Greenwich and Blackheath. Due to the freelance nature of my work, my working week is flexible and lesson times can be suited to each student.
I look forward to hearing from you!
Aled is one of our best tutors. They have a high-quality profile, verified qualifications, a quick response time, and great reviews from students!
I have been teaching privately for 8+ years and have also taught Violin and Viola in secondary schools. I have lead and supported several outreach projects with Royal College of Music 'Sparks' program including workshops, chamber tuition and group tuition. I teach all ages of students from children to adults -- it's never too late to start learning an instrument!
I am an accomplished Viola player having studied Viola performance at both the Royal College of Music, London and at the Royal Welsh College of Music, Cardiff. My tutors included Jon Thorne (Bake Quartet) and Philip Hayman (WNO). I have performed in master classes and coaching with players from the Chilingirian Quartet, the Eroica Quartet and with Simon Rowland-Jones and Lawrence Power amongst others. I have obtained the ABRSM Diploma Of Teaching, specialising in Strings.
My current students range from teenagers to Adults. Many of my students are working towards ABRSM, though I take a more flexible approach with other students; helping them prepare orchestral and chamber works for example. My teaching style is focused on solid technique and musicality. Equally as important is enabling students to be able to practice wisely, efficiently and independently.
“I feel so lucky finding a teacher like Aled. I really enjoy my lessons. He has the patience of a saint, is so inspirational and makes the lessons fun. And that is so important.”
