Medical education often emphasizes the acquisition of knowledge—pathophysiology, diagnostic criteria, and treatment algorithms. While these are essential, many medical students struggle not with what to learn, but with how to think and how to apply knowledge in real-world clinical settings. My training across clinical medicine, public health, and research has uniquely positioned me to help bridge this gap.
Through my experience in both inpatient and outpatient care, I have come to appreciate that clinical medicine is rarely straightforward. Patients present with complex, overlapping conditions influenced by social, economic, and behavioral factors. In teaching, I focus on helping students develop clinical reasoning—how to prioritize problems, make decisions under uncertainty, and adapt to evolving situations. These are the skills that transform textbook knowledge into effective patient care.
My background in public health further shapes my approach to medicine. Earning a Master of Public Health allowed me to understand healthcare beyond the individual patient and recognize the impact of systems, access, and disparities. This perspective has reinforced the importance of culturally competent and equitable care. I aim to help students understand that good medicine requires not only clinical expertise but also awareness of the broader context in which patients live.
In addition, my research experience enables me to guide students in practicing evidence-based medicine. Many students find it challenging to interpret and apply scientific literature. Having worked with both quantitative and qualitative methods, I can help them critically evaluate research and translate evidence into clinical decision-making—an essential skill in modern medicine.
Equally important is fostering a patient-centered approach. Medicine is both a science and a human endeavor. I emphasize empathy, communication, and cultural sensitivity, encouraging students to see patients as individuals rather than diagnoses.
Finally, as someone who has recently navigated the transition from medical student to resident, I understand the challenges students face. I can offer practical mentorship on clinical training, career planning, and professional development.
Ultimately, my goal is not to teach students what to memorize, but to teach them how to think, adapt, and grow into thoughtful, compassionate physicians capable of delivering meaningful, patient-centered care.
