My teaching method is to firstly understand what it is they want to learn if they have anything in mind, if not, I would be happy to offer something to learn. Then, after discussing where they are with their skills, I would begin a step by step approach to the music in a linear fashion, regularly reconsolidating learned material - all until the student is able to play the piece with confidence.
If you are a shy student, and we happen to be in a group class, I would not pressure you at all or ask you to perform infront of the class if you don't want to - I never liked being singled out in classes to answer or explain something, and so I'm not going to ever do that to you if it makes you uncomfortable. Remember, I am a student myself, and I'll adopt the teaching I enjoy receiving and employ it in our lessons. :)
However, depending on the piece they would like to learn, I would require prior notice to prepare for the lesson, i.e. learning the song myself to teach to the highest degree I can. My strong suits are not classical pieces with sheet music, however, this is not impossible for me - I much prefer teaching pop songs among many other genres like spanish/latin and pop punk.
It is required that the student has access to a piano or keyboard (pedels are optional but advised to be available) and a private space to practise in - or at least some peace and quite preferably x
Hiya! I'm a university student who is offering lessons; piano lessons and how to play certain pieces and songs you might not get taught by a normal piano teacher - for example your favourite songs you want to be able to play.
I've been teaching people casually (about 10 people) and have received good feedback so I'm on here now! I taught someone with no prior piano experience the Pirates of the Caribbean Theme - which I consider an achievement. I've been playing piano since I was 4 when I got my first keyboard.
I pick up a lot of music I like by ear and so that makes it much easier than the average person to learn and play songs, even if it's sheet music does not exist. I can read sheet music basically (academically I am at Grade 4 piano) and can offer guidance and mentorship on how to read piano sheets.
She is a really lovely girl and helped me learn some of my favourite songs I wanted to learn, but I didn't like the sounds of some of the online tutorials. She helped me make the piece sound like I wanted it to sound, although it was a difficult tune. Well done and good luck Sam.
I am a mutual friend of Sam's and I think she is a very trustworthy tutor because she has the patience that some online tutors lack which is really nice and motivating. She managed to help me learn the theme for Pirates of the Caribbean for a show and I still remember it to this day!!
