About Lydia

I am a twenty four year old first-class graduate from the University of Bristol. I studied Liberal arts, which means I am able to study English, Theology, French, History, Creative Writing and Philosophy all in one degree. As you can glean from that, I have a deep love for learning, and I find that tutoring is another form of learning for me. The more I learn about how my students think and learn, and the more questions they ask, the more I learn about my subject, and about the process of learning itself.

I studied illustration at art school for a year before coming to University, and enjoy integrating visual communication with my lessons. I am very interested in how art and the visual can be brought into learning and memory more.

I have 6 years of tutoring experience, and find it very rewarding being able to break knowledge down and build it back up for students. Being able to watch my students progress and understand things makes me truly joyful, especially while I build personal relationships with them based on mutual respect. I love being able to keep learning subjects that I no longer study, such as Maths and Chemistry. Being able to continuously connect with, understand and teach subjects that so inspired me allows me to expand my breadth of knowledge even wider.

About the lesson

I have been tutoring R.E for four years At GCSE level. For my own GCSE I studied R.S. on my own from a textbook as I was unable to take it at my school. I ended up achieving a 9 without taught lessons. Because of this, I can help students with their private study skills, time management and with their approach to exam questions at GCSE. In lessons, I will work on what I have found that each student struggles with, whether it be a certain topic, remembering certain things, or essay skills. I have experience working with students with ADHD. My technique involved understanding how students think about things, what helps them to remember (whether it be visual exercises, acronyms, metaphor, question and answer, mind maps etc.), and to adjust to help them meet their needs.

For A-Level, I studied Theology, which is a mix of ethics, philosophy and religion. I worked from a B to an A* in the philosophy strand, and from an A to an A* in the religion strand, so I know from personal experience how to improve essay technique. I am aware of issues that students commonly struggle with and will learn where these issues lie in the first session. In lessons, I will be questioning the student on what they have learnt in class, and will be setting regular exercises based on the holes in their knowledge or skillset. I am eager to help them improve both their essay technique and their understanding. My lessons are usually around an hour long, but this length is flexible.

Lydia was fantastic at helping my eldest son with dyslexia through gcse sciences and actually improved his grade to full marks! She also improved my youngest sons understanding of gcse Geography. Can’t recommend enough. I still don’t know how Lydia did it. Both boys obviously responded very well as results show and say she was super helpful. Thank you Lydia.

Lydia is a wonderfully creative thinker. She is deeply caring and optimistic, and applies these characteristics to her teaching methods. Naturally inquisitive and engaging, Lydia will make learning a genuine pleasure for any of her students - it is difficult not to enjoy time in her company, even when spent working at subjects a child may find difficult. Lydia is also naturally very sensitive and would approach teaching with care and adaptability, coaching every child according to their needs and strengths.
