About Valentina
I am a professional flutist with an international background in performance and teaching. I hold a Master’s degree from the University of Missouri, where I studied with Alice K. Dade, and I am currently completing my Doctorate of Musical Arts at the University of Cincinnati.
Throughout my career, I have studied and performed in several countries, including Colombia, Belgium, Argentina, Canada, and the United States, which has allowed me to develop a broad musical perspective and connect with different musical traditions and styles.
I have had the opportunity to study with renowned flutists such as Demarre McGill (Principal Flute of the Seattle Symphony), Amy Taylor, and internationally acclaimed soloist Sooyun Kim. These experiences have deeply influenced my artistic and pedagogical approach.
I have more than eight years of experience teaching private lessons. During my master’s degree, I taught in the Community Music Program at the University of Missouri, and I currently serve as a Graduate Assistant at the University of Cincinnati, where I work with university-level students.
As a performer, I have been actively involved in chamber music and orchestral performance. I have performed with chamber groups/collectives such as Mizzou New Music Ensemble, Soirée, and New Downbeat, exploring a wide range of repertoire, including contemporary music.
I have also performed with orchestras including the Medellín Philharmonic Orchestra, Lexington Philharmonic Orchestra, Orchestre de la Francophonie, and the Missouri Symphony Orchestra.
These diverse experiences as a performer and teacher allow me to guide students not only in developing strong technique but also in building musical confidence, artistry, and a deeper understanding of the flute repertoire.

My teaching approach is fully personalized. At the beginning of our work together, we will discuss your goals as a musician and create a plan that fits your interests, level, and musical aspirations. Whether you want to build a strong technical foundation, prepare for auditions, improve your sound, or enjoy playing the flute, our lessons will be designed to support your progress step by step.
During our lessons, we will focus on technique, musicality, style, tone color, and sound production. Developing a beautiful and flexible sound is central to my teaching, and I also emphasize musical expression and stylistic understanding so that students can play with confidence and artistry.
We will work with well-known flute methods and exercises such as Taffanel & Gaubert Daily Exercises, Reichert Daily Exercises, and Moyse – De la Sonorité, among others. These materials help develop technique, tone, articulation, flexibility, and control across the instrument.
A typical lesson may include warm-ups, tone exercises, technical studies, and repertoire work. Repertoire is chosen collaboratively so that students work on music they truly enjoy while also developing their skills and expanding their musical knowledge.
My lessons are open to students of all levels, from beginners discovering the flute for the first time to advanced players preparing for auditions, performances, or university studies. I also enjoy working with students interested in both classical repertoire and Latin music styles, helping them explore different rhythms, colors, and musical traditions.

Valentina is an amazing instructor! I was searching for online flute instructors, came across her profile, and immediately wanted to sign up for a class. It has been more than 10 years since I last picked up my flute, so I was really rusty. But Valentina reminded me of why I loved playing the flute in the first place! I like how the classes were conveniently provided online because I couldn't find any local instructors. Though I have to admit, I wondered how she would be able to hear if a note I played didn't sound well, but to my surprise, she was able to pick up on the slightest deviation from the note. Valentina is patient, creative, and really knows how to teach in a way that makes you fall in love with music again!
I shared the undergraduate years with Valentina, during which I was able to see what a passionate musician she is. Moreover, we learned to play in the same music program in Medellin, Colombia (RED) where she was always a natural leader and an inspiration for the new generations of musicians in the program. She always teaches and inspires; she is a great musician and an excellent person!
Valentina is great! I have known her for over 10 years, playing in orchestras and in school, and I can tell with confidence how passionate she is about the flute and teaching. She is very easy to talk to, very methodical, knowledgeable, and patient in her teaching. I recommend her with no hesitation!
