About Samantha

Nǐ hǎo! I am a native Mandarin speaker teaching in Australia. As a bilingual instructor fluent in both Mandarin and English, I have extensive experience teaching children and adults, from beginners to intermediate learners. I specialize in beginner lessons, including for those with no prior experience. Additionally, I hold a Diploma in Early Childhood Education.

My undergraduate and postgraduate degrees have equipped me with a variety of practical and technical skills. And over the years, my day-to-day teaching experience has significantly expanded my knowledge and skills in communication, as well as my responsibilities as a language teacher. Over the past 9 years, I have taught students of all ages and skill levels, each with different personalities, aspirations, and goals.

I have extensive experience teaching children and hold a Diploma in Early Years Education. With years of experience in childcare, primary school, and online settings, I have developed a deep understanding of how young children learn. I know that play and learning activities stimulate a child's natural curiosity, and I tune in to each child, empathize with them, and provide challenges at the right level for their individual needs. (for my online lessons I teach children aged 7 and above)

Additionally, I have experience as a Mandarin host and public speaker, which helps my students speak with confidence, fluency, and skill in building conversations.

I also have a genuine passion for translating and interpreting, as well as cultural studies. I hold a university certificate in translating and interpreting from further study. If you're interested in the fields of translation or interpretation, or in discussing related topics such as cultural competence, I would be happy to share my knowledge. If you are in need of translation or interpretation services or quotes, please don't hesitate to reach out to me too.

As a native Chinese speaker living in an English-speaking country, I understand both languages and cultures and can bridge the gap between Chinese and English, helping students understand Mandarin grammar, pronunciation, and culture more easily while avoiding common mistakes.

I have had the privilege of being invited to many community settings over the years, where I volunteered and shared my knowledge of Chinese and Asian culture, traditions, and celebrations with the community.

My lessons are conducted online through Superprof, with Microsoft Teams as an alternative. This means you/or your children can take lessons from the comfort of your own home. I recommend 45min lessons for adults or 30min for young children depend on your schedule.

(Please note: On Superprof, tutors can set their own prices, lesson durations, and choose whether or not to offer a free first lesson. To avoid any confusion, I’d like to clarify that I do not offer a free first lesson.)

I have taught students of all ages and skill levels, covering areas such as basic vocabulary, pronunciation, and advanced grammar, reading, and writing, all of which can be tailored to your goals and interests. My teaching approach is also about making Mandarin learning both practical and enjoyable. I am also successful in explaining difficult topics in an easy and intuitive way. I am currently focusing on teaching students at beginner to intermediate levels. Please note, at this stage, I am not taking upper Intermediate or advanced-level students.

Whether you need Chinese for travel, business, career-related purposes, or conversational practice, I can help with all of the above and more. If you're a complete beginner, I’m the perfect tutor for you as well.

I tailor my lessons to each student’s goals, interests, and language level, fostering collaborative learning cycles that bring out the best in them. My classroom is effective, positive, and student-centered.

I continuously evaluate my students' progress and actively listen to their needs, drawing from a solid foundation in key teaching content to ensure the most effective results. I also assess what’s working for them along the way. Above all, I strive to make language learning enjoyable and spread positivity.

I also incorporate intentional teaching strategies, cultural insights, vocabulary-building activities, and high-quality documentation into my teaching, all aimed at helping you understand the context behind the language and enriching your learning experience.

I believe that learning a language is about more than just words; it’s about understanding people, cultures, and history. Languages are powerful, in demand, and, most importantly, learning a language is exciting and a lot of fun!

  • 1) Did you grow up speaking this language? Or were you inspired by a trip abroad, an individual or a certain aspect of the culture?

Yes, Mandarin Chinese is my first language. I was born and grew up in China, where Mandarin was the language I used every day at home, at school, and in the community. Growing up immersed in the language and culture gave me a strong foundation not only in speaking and listening, but also in reading, writing, and understanding cultural nuances.
  • 2) Can you name a living, historical or fictional character that you think is the emblematic representative of the language's culture?

One historical figure I admire is Confucius. His ideas about respect, education, and self-improvement have deeply influenced Chinese culture and the way the language is used, especially in expressions, idioms, and values passed down through generations. Many Chinese phrases and ways of thinking still reflect his teachings today.
  • 3) Is there a typical word, phrase, tradition or expression in the language that you particularly like?

One phrase I particularly like is “慢慢来” (màn man lái), which means “take it slowly”. It reflects a very important cultural value in Chinese learning and life: patience. It reminds learners that progress takes time and that it’s okay to learn step by step, especially with a language as rich as Mandarin.
  • 4) Why does speaking this language matter to you?

Mandarin matters deeply to me because it connects me to my roots, my family, and my culture. At the same time, it has become a bridge between cultures in my life. Teaching Mandarin allows me to share not only a language, but also stories, perspectives, and understanding between people from different backgrounds.
  • 5) What is the main difficulty in learning this language and what can help the process of learning?

The main difficulty in learning Mandarin is usually tones and characters. However, with the right guidance, consistent practice, and a supportive learning environment, these challenges become manageable. I believe learning should be clear, structured, and encouraging, with plenty of speaking practice and real-life examples to build confidence.
  • 6) Provide a valuable anecdote related to your language learning or your days at school.

At school in China, we spent a lot of time reading texts aloud and practising characters stroke by stroke. At the time, it felt repetitive, but I later realised how valuable that foundation was. It taught me discipline, attention to detail, and appreciation for the logic and beauty behind Chinese characters, something I now enjoy sharing with my students.
  • 7) How has travel or a specific trip helped you to increase your skill and knowledge of the language?

Living and working in different environments and later teaching Mandarin in Australia helped me see my own language from a learner’s perspective. Explaining Mandarin to non-native speakers strengthened my understanding of grammar, pronunciation, and common difficulties, and helped me become a clearer, more empathetic teacher.
