I rely a lot on game-based learning activities by designing games in which the students are either divided into teams, as to spur on competitiveness or to simply challenge themselves as individuals. My thesis topic for my Master's Degree was 'Game-based learning in foreign language education and training (Years 5 and 6)', where I tried to prove the hypothesis that game-based learning delivers higher results overall as opposed to 'traditional' learning and teaching (introduce the target grammar and/or vocabulary, give out worksheets, give a test). For the game-based learning activities I presented two games to them - student friendly versions of Who Wants to be a Millionaire and Family Feud, where the questions targeted the vocabulary and grammar we had covered over the second term of their academic year. As a result of my experiment, the group which were taught by using game-based learning activities had an overall score of 85,83%, whereas the other group had an overall score of 73,93%. Overall, I think that this strategy guarantees a lot of laughter and positive energy, while simultaneously delivering high academic results.
