About Nick
It's important to create an atmosphere where students enjoy what they are learning, because I believe that if they don't enjoy it, they won't reach their potential. I try to do this by adjusting my teaching to reflect the needs and interests of the student, and by putting more emphasis on praising students for what they have done right rather than on what they have done wrong (although of course I then make sure they know for next time!) I am a qualified teacher with experience teaching Business Studies and ICT at an 11 - 18 school. I have a degree in Business Studies, which included a lot of Economics and Maths. As well as that, I've been running my own business for 12 years, so I have a great deal of practical, real world experience to draw from. Although I am not currently teaching, I am looking to return to the classroom as a maths specialist, as I have always loved the subject. I am currently taking a Teaching Subject Specialism course in maths, which I will complete by the end of June 2019. I have experience of tutoring children at KS2 because my own child is in year 5. I think it's very important to try and make any subject content as engaging and fun as possible whilst making the underlying concepts as clear as possible. I am very reactive to needs of the learner - one of the great things about tutoring is that this is much easier than in a classroom! I have previously worked as an in-house trainer for a large organisation, training their staff to use Microsoft Word and Excel, and have also run night school classes in word processing and spreadsheets leading to an ECDL qualification. As I am self-employed in my main job, I can be fairly flexible with regard to timing sessions - please feel free to ask for a time that suits you even if I'm not marked as available.
