About Richard
I’ve learned how to teach myself what I needed to improve my own playing skills from a variety of high-level teachers. The basics are always there for us once we establish them. Good tonal production, organized practice sessions, and a positive attitude coming from steady progress and our love of playing is the key. Having started Saxophone 62 years ago obviously gives me a lot of experience in many areas. I love studying music still as there is no end to what can be done to deepen my experience of playing the horn!

I’ve been a professional musician for 54 years and have studied jazz saxophone with the best. Joe Viola, head of the woodwind dept at Berklee College for many years, Joe Allard at New England Conservatory, & Charlie Banscios.
I understand and can teach correct tonguing, embouchure, breathing, hand position, fingering options, the altissimo range, overtones, how to improve your reading skills, and jazz vocabulary and repertoire.
To do this I assess where each student is and prepare a plan of development in any areas of interest but also in areas that need improvement. I always encourage steady progress over quick fixes and maintain a positive experience.

Not only is Richard a professional saxophone player on all of the saxes: soprano, alto, and tenor, he is a teacher beyond any I have ever taken instruction from over the last 10 years. He is patient and understanding and tries to connect the instrument to the feelings of the student. When I take a lesson from Richard, it feels as though I’m a part of the instrument. It’s hard to understand how that can be, but it is absolutely correct. It is almost like a spiritual connection. The bottom line is, I cannot recommend him highly enough.
