I am a recent university graduate having studied Biology. My school and university experiences have highlighted the importance of student and teacher engagement along with a high teaching quality in any subject, particularly in subjects as relevant and important as the Sciences.
There is no point in teaching when interest is lost. Bored students won't remember boring lessons. So, I believe that it's important to use intuition to judge when interest is low and use the "cool" side of Science to regain interest in the topic. It is the teachers responsibility to ensure the student is learning the syllabus by choosing to do so.
My experiences include teaching my three younger siblings the parts of Science that they don't understand. The same thing went for back in secondary school :)
I have also briefly tutored neighbors in GCSE level physics and biology and have even taught some more advanced concepts to non-scientist adults.
