About Lewis Hier
LEWIS HIER THOMAS BSc (Hons) GDip PgDip
MY EXPERIENCE
Living in southwest London, I am a fine art graduate of the world-leading Royal College of Art. I have exhibited across London in commercial galleries (Ad Lib Gallery, Luminoir Art Gallery, etc), institutional spaces (RCA Hangar Gallery, cultural institutes, etc), and community activations (Holland Park, Richmond Park area, etc).
MY MEDIA
- Charcoal and graphite
- Soft pastel
- Printmaking
- Metal engraving
- Painting
MY LOCATION
I live in the Richmond area, southwest London. I can travel throughout southwest, west and central London for tuition. I also teach online.
MY OWN ARTWORKS
My creative practice explores the realities of, and tensions between, perceptions of male bodies – of the self and other – as a site of desire and disgust, delving into the psychology of physicality and relationships. In doing so, I ask the viewer to consider questions of identity, sexuality, and the many forms of dissonance or resonance between internal and external realities. Many of my artworks are psychosocial constructions which draw from my lived experience, often simultaneously contributing to societal discourses around matters which I find pertinent.
MY BACKGROUND
With a non-traditional background in healthcare before moving into the arts, I know how intimidating it can be to take the leap into something new! As a tutor, that's where I come in, supporting you to realise your ambitions and enjoy your creative journey.

Every lesson is bespoke and tailored to you!
My approach is to understand you, why you've been drawn towards art, and what you're hoping to achieve with tuition - this allows me to tailor our work together and ensure you get what you are hoping for from my tuition. Whether you are completely new to trying your hand at art, or a regular practitioner looking to take your work to the next level, I'll support you on your journey.
I work with children, teenagers and adults. Depending on where you are based, I can travel to you, teach you at my home studio, or over Zoom.
MAKING
In my creative practice, I specialise in contemporary life drawing of the male nude, using dry media (charcoal, pastel, metalpoint), printmaking (metal etching, lino, wood block, monotype) and painting (oil). Therefore, if the human figure or these techniques are of specific interest to you, I'll be especially well placed to help.
RESEARCH
My own artwork is often quite research-based in its development, drawing on inspiration from contemporary and archival photography and literature. I enjoy the academic side of fine art, so would also be happy to provide you with tuition to better enable your research, methodological and conceptual approaches in your creative practice.
ART SCHOOL PREP
If you are preparing to apply to art school, I can also offer help with reviewing and providing feedback on artist CVs, portfolios and statements.

I highly recommend Lewis as an exceptional art teacher. He is incredibly talented, organised, and dedicated, with a natural ability to connect with children and inspire creativity in every student. His lessons are always engaging, thoughtful, and encouraging, creating a positive environment where students feel confident to express themselves artistically. His professionalism and attention to details elevate the quality of his classes to another level and that is what makes them truly special.
Lewis is a very understanding and warm-hearted person who genuinely cares about the people around him. He is always organized and well-prepared in everything he does, especially at work, which makes him reliable and professional. He’s also someone you can learn a lot from — thoughtful, capable, and constantly inspiring others with his attitude and work ethic.
Lewis is not only an amazing artist he is also a wonderful tutor and person. He has the ability to bring the best out of my 12 year old son through creative fun. Highly qualified Lewis understands all mediums and has lots of techniques that have helped my son’s drawing techniques. Lewis is also just a lovely person to have in the house every week and goes above and beyond for his students. Highly recommend without hesitation.
Lewis is a kind, polite, and creative person whose passion for particularly figurative work and attention to detail regarding material, form, and colour is not only deeply inspiring but also highly practical. Lewis can look at work critically and provide clear guidance, drawing on a wide knowledge of the practical aspects of the craft- knowing exactly what tools to use and how to use them. Furthermore, his strong academic background is a significant asset when searching for references and artists relevant to one’s own practice.
Lewis is curious, empathetic and rigorous in character.
His teaching is with patience, understanding and accuracy.
