About Michael

I have been involved in education for the past 15 years.  My focus as a tutor is in the Visual Arts and the American SAT and SSAT exams. Tutoring one on one, is a period of time when the tutor’s and the student’s personality work together.   My job is to build confidence and to educate the subject at hand. THE ARTS: I have worked closely with students for AS and A2 coursework in Fine Art, Photography, and Art History.  When teaching the course independently, I use the student's interests to shape the syllabus to make learning more engaging.  This has led to deep appreciation of art history, as well as exciting projects created by students in paint, drawing materials, chemical photography, and digital photography. ACADEMICS: As an SAT tutor, I feel that my strongest asset is that I took the test when I was in my teens.  I understand the complexities of taking the exam and the fears a student might have.  The SAT is often perceived as unknown and alien to students.  My task is to dissolve that myth.  I have successfully worked with students for over 5 years on the SAT.  It has a structure that can be taught.  The new version has several changes.  I am completely up to date on these developments and have already tutored this version. My approach is to find the areas of difficulty; be it sentence structure, algebraic equations, or the specific demands of an essay.  Explain and explore these with the student and make the weak areas stronger.  11+ EXAM: As the level of Maths and English in the SAT is much more complex than the 11+ exam. I take the same approach as to the 11+ as to the SAT. To find the problem areas, explain them, and build confidence to the student. This principle is my basic guide to all of my teaching. To build the student’s confidence by working through the problem areas. As they improve, I feel honoured to have assisted in their education. BACKGROUND: My formal education background is someone who has experienced the American and the British systems. I went to an American High School, Franklin High School in Somerset, NJ. Receiving a very good grade point average, taking part in several AP (Advanced Placement) classes (English, Art History, Fine Art, and Biology). I received my Master's Degree at the Slade School of Art, part of University College London. I have given application advice and worked with international families who wish for their child to attend American Colleges. Fitness is very important to me. I enjoy running, yoga, and going to the gym. I have been practising tai chi for over four years. NOTE: I am based in Tulse Hill, SE21. I am more than willing to work in any area if necessary for your educational needs. If your location is outside of London Zone 1, 2, or 3 there will be additional fees for travel cost and time.
