I have played Classical guitar in ensemble, including several guitar orchestras. I have played in many Jazz ensembles and had my own trio for a while. When teaching Classical guitar for beginners I generally follow the Grades of ABRSM as a guideline to progress. I also use ensemble playing from the beginning so the student gains confidence quickly. For jazz there must be an emphasis on harmony in order to understand the structure of a Jazz compositions.
