About Benji
I am the drummer for a small, local band in Portland. I mostly play finger style acoustic guitar and read horror novels in my free time. I lived in the city over the pandemic where I produced for dozens of artists and supported them at local venues. After I took APMT in high school, I went on to work toward a Music & Sonic Arts associate's degree. When I realized the majority of my peers were struggling to keep up with the class content, I began tutoring sessions in the Veteran's Resource Center and saw great success in aiding my fellow classmates. I am tutoring theory in the hopes that I can one day share my adapted curriculum in a classroom as a teacher!

Communication is one of the most basic and important human skills throughout all of history. The ability to apply your knowledge of sentence structure, vocabulary, and proper grammar is crucial to effective communication of ideas; the same applies to music! The key distinction here is that music is naturally intuitive to our brains: in language, the rules and structure differ, whereas in music we hear the dissonance, we feel the chorus coming, breaking barriers of communication. I will help you develop this skill and teach you how to use it to your advantage to promote a swift and successful grasp on key theory concepts.
Someone with no experience choosing me as a tutor can generally expect that we will briefly cover the note system and the concept of scales and chords using a piano diagram. From there, we will begin building on your newfound basic understanding by breaking down and analyzing tools like the circle of fifths and modern song structure. Someone with experience looking to refine their skills choosing me as a tutor can generally expect that we will very briefly brush over tools like scales and the circle of fifths and roll into more advanced concepts such as modulation.
