I would first look for what the student is struggling with the most through looking at past work and practice problems. Then I can look through said problems and find what the student was having difficulty with and break down the concepts found in what the student was struggling with. I believe that having another student help you with a concept allows you to discover tricks & workarounds that you wouldn't learn in class.
