About Philip
I am married with a grown-up daughter, and live in Harpenden, Herts. - but originate from Yorkshire, so understand the desire to both receive and offer good value for money!
I have been a Maths tutor for over 20 years, with more than 10 years experience teaching all levels from KS3 to A-Level at local good and outstanding schools. I am an Honours graduate with a previous professional engineering background in research and computer analysis.
I am also a current Maths GCSE and A-Level Examiner.
I have spent much voluntary time in Scouting as a Group Leader: this has helped me gain an even better understanding of how young people develop and respond to situations.
I come across as an understanding and caring person - but nevertheless someone who tries to squeeze the best out of people. This is reflected in my successful tutoring of students to numerous Russel group universities including Oxbridge, scholarships to top public schools including Charterhouse, and helping move GCSE 'Foundation' level students up to ultimately grade 'A' at A-level maths! I care for each individual, being available to help each one daily through messaging as required when further explanations or worked examples are needed between sessions.
I am new to Superprof, so can only provide many student and parent recommendations through email or messaging from customers gained through word of mouth, rather than through this portal.

My teaching is on a one-to-one basis and supports and develops a student's progress at school, following the curriculum as required, and filling in any gaps discovered from the past. I set appropriately high standards for each student, with the aim to extend their thinking and so improve understanding, but also to enhance confidence at every stage. I am a very amenable and patient tutor, always seeking new ways to explain a topic in an easy, understandable manner, and view 'wrong' answers as a vital learning opportunity.
My teaching methods employ the use of a range of text books (all exams Edexcel, OCR, AQA, etc), some computer software resources, reference to any past exam papers and lots of discussion to gauge understanding at every step.
Any online method is acceptable, but most students tend to use FaceTime or WhatsApp video. All lessons last a minimum of 1 hour, but generally go over a few minutes to ensure each session finishes neatly with solid understanding.

In addition if/when requested, I do provide further questions, and mark them (with further useful comments) outside tutoring hours, to help solidify the learning outcomes.
