As Head of History in an International school, it was my responsibility to ensure that all pupils understood the curriculum and that means an adaptable approach to teaching. I have taught History at S1-S6 level. I have taught Sociology at S5-6 level. I understand what examiners are looking for and will work closely with pupils to ensure that they cover every aspect of their courses and are well prepared for their examinations. Understanding basic concepts is key to good grades so this will be our first priority. At any level an ability to analyse is key to the higher grades, so this will be our next focus. You will find my passion for the subject engaging and interesting and I will endeavour to pass this on to you as my pupil. I would hope to develop a relationship based on mutual respect and hard work. I will commit to improving your level.
Over ten years in Education, Honours Degree in Humanities, PG Cert in History. I was also an examiner for OCR. I was Head of History in an international school and currently work in Pupil Support in an Edinburgh school. I have been tutoring pupils for many years. Pupils under my tutelage can expect to make significant improvements and will pass their examinations. Any area of History can be taught.
I started my career in teaching in a primary school in 2007. I then moved into secondary teaching in 2009. I became Head of History at The British College in Benalmadena in Spain. I had responsibility for the entire curriculum and for pupil progression at all levels. No student of mine has ever failed an exam. Some achieved outstanding grades and went on to study History themselves, as my passion for the subject was palpable.
Being an examiner for the OCR group enabled me to get a good perspective on what examiners expect in order to achieve the higher grades. I have taught a wide range of topics in History, and have recently achieved a Postgraduate Certificate in History from the University of Edinburgh.
I currently work in a secondary school in Edinburgh as a Pupil Support Assistant. This means that I have a lot of free time that I can now dedicate to the development of pupils preparing for their external examinations.
Nicola is a very honesty person who is also straight to the point. I find this a good trait to have as a tutor as you know their aim will be to help people and get them to where they need to be. Nicola is also very approachable and easy to speak to.
I was lucky enough to have Miss Nicola O'Neil as my A level History tutor. She is exceptionally passionate and committed to sharing knowledge of the subject with her students, this enthusiasm and hard work is nothing but contagious. Miss O’Neil believed in my potential, academically and personally, even when I struggled to believe it myself. She sets expectations for all her students and pushes them to dream big. While our lessons were interesting and engaging, Miss O’Neil did not just prepare us for exam day, but equipped us with the skills and work ethnic necessary to thrive in future academia and beyond. In her words - “shoot for the moon, even if you miss, you’ll land amongst the stars”.
She was my history teacher during my A levels, and was the single best teacher I have had. She is dedicated, enthusiastic, and excellent at explaining complex topics as well as what is expected of you in exams. She is the reason I built up my confidence and ended up succeeding in my A levels, as well as my inspiration when it came to applying for a degree. The skills she taught me gave me a strong advantage over many of my coursemates during my undergraduate, especially when it came to analysing sources and knowing how to write a concise and efficient essay.
