About Sabrina
Hello,
My name is Sabrina! I am a Spring 2024 Pitt graduate, double majoring in Psychology and English Writing, with a certificate in grant writing. While a student at Pitt, I had the opportunity to work in two different labs, as well as work in the inpatient setting at UPMC Western Psych.
In terms of research, I pursued clinical psychology - particularly adolescents at clinical high risk for psychosis. I have presented poster presentations at three different conferences, as well as successfully completed and undergraduate honors thesis. I am currently co-writing another publication.
In addition to one-on-one peer tutoring, my other teaching experiences include being selected for the Chancellor's Undergraduate Teaching Fellowship, in which I designed and implemented curriculum for an undergraduate level course. Working with students is a passion of mine, and I hope to teach as a professor in the future. It's a privilege to help students achieve their short and long-term academic goals :)

My tutoring includes two different elements:
1. Exam/Studying Improvement
- Evaluation of strengths/weaknesses
- General walkthrough of studying techniques
- Teach-back methodology - I'm a big proponent of "teaching" the material to others in order to learn it. In my tutoring students, I will walk students on how to break down their study material into "lessons" and have them "teach" it to me until they are fully comfortable speaking on a given topic.
- Tips about where to find/use outside resources
- Exam tips
Please not that my tutoring does not focus on teaching specific material, but rather provides students with a framework for how to study and LEARN the material (rather than memorize). This will be especially helpful in higher level coursework, which often draws on material from prior classes!
2. Introduction to Reading and Writing Research/Psych Papers
APA style writing can be intimidating for students new to psychology! My tutoring includes an introductory approach to reading and writing psychology research.
Reading:
- Navigating Google Scholar, PubMed, PittCatt
- How to effectively skim papers
- Interpreting research design and basic statistics
- Understanding big concepts/take aways
- Finding sources for academic papers
- Conducting a basic literature review
Writing:
APA style writing is often very formulaic. One you understand the rules and language of psychology papers, writing them becomes much easier.
- Formatting (font, indentation, spacing)
- Crafting a strong and compelling introduction
- Language of basic statistics (T-Test, ANOVAs, Square)
- Writing a comprehensive discussion
- APA style citations (in-text and end citations)
Mentoring (Pitt Student Specific):
As a Pitt graduate, I am able to speak on some of the opportunities students have to explore careers and research as a student at the University of Pittsburgh (including BPhil and honors undergraduate research option).
