About Maya

I am a guitar tutor with 5 years of teaching experience and a Bachelor of Music in Popular Music and Recording with guitar as my primary instrument. I have taught over 175 students and I have an unusually eclectic musical background spanning indie rock, ambient electronic, contemporary classical, and fingerstyle folk, all of which find their way into my teaching in ways that consistently surprise and delight students who expected something more conventional. I have released two EPs of original material using guitar and loop pedal and have performed at festivals and art spaces rather than conventional music venues, which reflects my orientation towards music as a creative and experimental practice. I began teaching because I wanted to share the sense of creative possibility I experience with the instrument, and after five years I can say that this ambition has shaped every lesson I have given.

My guitar teaching deliberately sits outside conventional approaches because I believe the guitar is an instrument of almost infinite possibility and standard teaching often constrains students to a surprisingly narrow range of that possibility. I introduce loop pedal techniques from the beginning because the ability to build a song in real time teaches rhythm, arrangement, texture, and creativity simultaneously in a way that no other exercise achieves. My approach to music theory is practical and player-focused — I teach the theory that makes the guitar make more sense, not the theory that appears on examinations, and I am explicit about this distinction with every student. For students who are interested in music production, I teach guitar as one element within a larger sonic palette and offer guidance on how to record, layer, and process guitar in a home studio context. My technical instruction is injury-conscious from the outset — I address right-hand technique, left-hand finger pressure, and general playing posture as health and longevity issues, not just musical ones, because repetitive strain injuries end guitar careers prematurely and are almost entirely preventable. Students in my studio range from those pursuing traditional classical examinations to those making original music for social media, and I adapt my entire approach — vocabulary, resources, assessment, goals — to serve each purpose authentically. I use comparative listening extensively: we listen to the same piece played by different artists and discuss what choices each player made and why, which builds critical listening and interpretive thinking simultaneously. Improvisation is approached through different modal colours in my teaching — students experiment with how different scales sound and feel emotionally before learning their theoretical names, so the music always comes before the label. Students bringing original song ideas receive co-writing support — I help them develop harmonic structures, melodic ideas, and arrangements rather than simply correcting their existing work. Every student I teach eventually realises the guitar is stranger and more interesting than they initially thought.
