A beginner guitarist should start with proper posture, tuning, and a handful of open chords.

• Tuning is essential because an out-of-tune guitar makes every chord sound wrong.
• Open chords like E minor, A minor, C, G, and D are the building blocks of countless songs.
• A metronome helps you develop steady timing from the very beginning.

Practice chord transitions slowly at first, then build speed as your fingers remember the shapes.

Guitar lessons in York typically cost about £24/h per hour.

This rate may change depending on several factors:

• The student's level (beginner, intermediate, or advanced)
• The teacher's credentials and background (grades, degrees, professional work)
• Lesson length and frequency (half-hour, full hour, one-off or regular)
• The lesson format (via video call, face-to-face, or at a music school)

Booking a package of lessons often brings the hourly rate down. Some teachers include a free trial lesson so you can check the fit before committing.

This principle, also called the Pareto principle, helps guitarists focus on high-impact skills.

• Learning these five shapes covers roughly 80% of what you need for rhythm guitar.
• The pentatonic scale is the 20% of theory that unlocks 80% of lead guitar solos.
• Drummers and singers rely on guitarists who keep steady time.

The 80/20 mindset cuts through information overload and keeps your practice efficient.
