About James
- What kind of experience do you have?
I have experience both in teaching one-to-one instrumental lessons in Piano, Singing and Guitar. I have taught these instruments to both children and adults of many different levels and abilities.
I also have a number of years teaching choral singing to both beginners and experienced musicians. I have been Musical Director and Composer for the theatre company BurntOut Theatre for the last 4 years. Reviews of my composition work include: "Dreamy choral harmonies" (TimeOut), "The onstage singing, an evocative mix of psalms, hymns and folk tunes, composed and led by James Reynolds, creates an enjoyably atmospheric ambiance" (The Stage), "Really powerful" (BBC Radio 1)
My choral compositions have been sung by renowned choirs in the UK.
I am also a successful composer for Television - my piano compositions have been widely broadcast on BBC, ITV and Channel 4, in programmes such as Poirot, Lewis and Paralympic Games coverage. You can listen to my compositions here: (concealed information)

- Tell me about some of your current students.
I am currently teaching Singing to a 13 year old girl who is preparing for Grade 3.
I am also coaching a 20 year old actress Piano, who is a beginner, and was required to learn a Chopin Nocturne for a feature film.
I am also coaching a 17 year old boy in Composition.
Currently I am conducting two choirs - one is a beginners choir, the other is a choir made up of professional musicians.

I'm James and I'm a friendly and fun music teacher, conductor, choir leader and composer. I am passionate about music, and I love inspiring young people to share my love of music.
- Which subject(s) do you teach?
I teach Piano, Guitar, Voice, and Composition.
I can prepare children, students and adults for Grades and also for auditions, performances and recitals - or if you just want to learn for fun!
- Tell me about your qualifications.
I studied a BA Music at Leeds University which has given me a excellent training in all aspects of music practice, and an insight into musical communities, and particularly a foundation in classical music.
I also trained at the renowned London Centre for Contemporary Music, so I have training in Performance and a wide experience in Pop, Musical Theatre and Contemporary styles.
- How much do you charge?
I charge £30 per hour. I also charge an extra £5 per hour to cover my travel costs.
I will give a discount for group sessions of £20 per hour per student (for groups of 2-3) or £15 per student for groups of 4 or more students.
- Where do you teach?
I live both in Guildford and Kensington&Chelsea - so I can travel to your home in either of these areas, or I can teach in my own home.
- When are you available?
Very flexible - just let me know what suits you, and I will try to accommodate!
- Which ages and levels do you teach?
I can teach from age 5 years to adult. I can teach beginners, prepare students for Grades up to Grade 8, and also support students who are studying music at University or Music Colleges.
- Which qualifications do you prepare your students for?
I can prepare students for all grades up to Grade 8 ABRSM in Piano, Guitar, Singing and Composition.
I can also prepare children and adults for auditions, performances and recitals.
- Do you have a personal message for students?
I am very patient and encouraging. My motto is 'there is no wrong way to play music... only a better way!' - Don't worry about making mistakes!!
