We offer tuition in maths and English using the Kumon method of study which was developed in Japan over 60 years ago. There are several key goals for students studying Kumon. The obvious one is to improve a child’s ability in the subject studied, but also a big part of Kumon is the encouragement of good study skills which are an essential part of continued success in education. Improved confidence, concentration and organisation skills are all a part of this. Kumon is a supplementary education programme designed to enhance and develop skills in the basic core subjects of maths and English. Hundreds of thousands of children study with Kumon worldwide and its international popularity shows that the core principles of maths and English do not change. If you can add fractions in Britain then you should be able to add them in Germany, Japan, Australia, India... It is a no frills programme which doesn’t use gimmicks or promises of instant results. We do not use calculators or word processors. All one really needs to do Kumon is a pencil, a piece of paper and a brain. We supply the pencil and the paper and together we work to train the brain so it can realise its potential.
- Ages and Levels Covered
Both the maths and English programmes cover a wide span of topics which is why they are suitable for such a wide age range of children: – currently we have 5 year olds and 15 year olds (and everything between!). Kumon is not based on age, but on ability. Gifted children are nurtured to further develop their talents, but likewise those that are out of their depth at school and need time and practice to find their way back, can do that with Kumon. The maths programme has a very broad spectrum of topics going from very basic familiarity with numbers all the way to calculus. There is not a doubt that the Kumon maths programme is ‘proper’ maths and it sticks with the core traditions of mathematics to ensure a good grip of the basics through rigour and actually doing problems. I have had many children come to me age 8, 9, 10 who were still counting on their fingers, or hadn’t picked up fairly easy number patterns (like how to add 10 to a number) or that 4+5 is the same as 5+4. Yet, with a bit of practice, time and patience found their way back on track and went on to easily cope with such notoriously thorny topics as ‘fractions’. Again this underpins part of the Kumon ethos – you need to understand earlier work before moving on to harder topics. Likewise for the English programme it is not based on age but on ability, which allows the gifted to exploit their talents, and those feeling left behind, to find their feet. There is material relevant to those beginning to read and write as well as material on par with those studying ‘A’ level English. Also, the English programme uses such a wide range of texts that many parents themselves comment that one unexpected spin-off benefit of Kumon English is an improvement in their child’s general knowledge and their own! The material reflects Kumon’s worldwide diversity, and includes both classic fiction and fact based texts including those with historical/geographical and scientific slants. Good skills in English are not just relevant for English lessons, but for all lessons, and for life.
- Opening Times

- Additional Information
There are some important aspects to Kumon study that parents should be aware of when considering it. Unlike traditional tuition, which usually involves a tutor seeing a student once a week for an hour (and may or may not involve some homework), Kumon is based on the principle of doing a little bit of work every day. Students attend the centre once or twice a week but also must complete a piece of work on the days they don’t attend. This should take around 15-20 minutes. Daily study is key to Kumon.
Recommendations

“I have definitely noticed an improvement in time management and concentration.”
“My daughter was only 5 when she started Kumon and has certainly coped very well with maths at school.”

“My son's teacher has said that in maths, he has made great improvements “

“The Kumon routine and marking are a discipline for parents as well as children. You only get what you put in. “
“Self-discipline, organisation and concentration are areas that will continue to improve through Kumon routines. Some days there doesn't seem enough hours to fit Kumon in. It is not an easy option!”“There has been an improvement in reading and writing. I am positive about the future as I know the Kumon system will help going forward.”
