I like to tailor my teaching style based on how an individual responds to different methods as no single approach works for everybody. Often I find that the difficulty with explaining science is not that the concepts are hard but putting it into simple language has often been missed by teachers and so I look to identify clear ways of getting the fundamental ideas across with an everyday analogy.

Find out the level my student is at and understand where there strengths and weaknesses lie. This may be done through looking at a question or asking the student what they already know about the topic we're covering in that session. Then slowly work through the topic or question ensuring the student understands why each step is taken not just what each step is.

This role, which I adopted in my gap year, comprised of two separate functions, one as a Math Tutor specialising in intervention work for struggling students and one as a Maths Teacher leading my own classes.
I aim to quickly gain a feeling for my student's current abilities and difficulties: which topics do they find difficult or problematic? From there, by use of problems and examples, I gradually expand the student's comfort zone, explaining useful techniques with which to deal with the problems in question.
I base my classes on what the student feels they need the most help with. I explain problems they cannot solve and then use this as a springboard to work through similar exercises, helping to make the student as confident as possible in that topic.

Hello, I am a second year Maths student doing a degree at the University of York. As well as this; I have a scholarship in which I am learning to be an outstanding teacher alongside Harrogate Grammar School.
