About Nicolas
Experienced Chess Teacher – All ages from 4 years old (private lessons, schools, clubs, businesses). I am 36 years old and I teach chess primarily to young people, notably at the Palamède and Jéen clubs in the 16th arrondissement, but also in schools in Paris. Holding the BAFA (French youth leader qualification) and the BSB (French chess instructor qualification), I frequently lead chess camps during school holidays and, as an open federal arbiter, I regularly referee tournaments in Paris and the surrounding area. For me, chess is much more than a game: it develops discipline, organization, concentration, and creativity. I have worked with students from all backgrounds, from 7 to 77 years old, with a majority of children aged 4 to 12. My approach is personalized: I quickly understand each student's goals and stick to them. I can suggest a change of direction (joining a club, participating in a camp, a tournament, etc.) when relevant, but the enjoyment of learning in a fun way always remains the priority. In addition, I teach partner dancing, bachata and kizomba. I love the art of adapting to one's partner and creating a connection that elevates the individual, which inspires me to use many teaching examples… or avoid them! Experience and references: International Elo rating: 1741 FIDE with a peak of 1836 before the reform (2100 on Lichess). I started playing chess very late, at 20, with my two younger brothers in the village of Créon (Gironde 33). One of them has an Elo rating of over 2200, which allows me to guide a student when I see they need to step up their game, as he is also a chess coach in Paris. Training through books and competition before the internet age. Occasional coaches: Master Eric Leriche. Best performance: 1st Open B Créon, August 2018. Winner with a near-perfect score of 8.5/9 (a record that needs to be broken). Teaching diploma. Interests: dance, sports. I'm a complete novice, but I think the pinnacle of my development is attending a ballet or opera. • Reviewing/learning the rules of the game • Working on classic tactical themes (forks, skewers, checkmate patterns, opening traps, etc.) • Openings, middlegame, endgames • Introduction to strategic concepts (weak/strong squares, pawn structures, piece activity, etc.) • Chess culture (famous games, renowned players)

Lessons in French or English (not perfectly bilingual, but I run two workshops in English at a bilingual school which are going wonderfully). I draw inspiration from the Céline Alvarez method (author of the book "The Natural Laws of the Child"), which took Montessori methods and applied them in practice. I can also adapt and use a "ghettossori" approach if requested and/or if the child is receptive to it, as they need a more structured environment. Recreational lessons – Objective: enjoyment and personal growth. My lessons for children or beginners focus primarily on the pleasure of playing and harmonious progress. They include: • Reviewing/learning the rules of the game • Working on classic tactical themes (forks, skewers, checkmate patterns, opening traps, etc.) • Openings, middlegame, endgame • Introduction to strategic concepts (weak/strong squares, pawn structures, piece activity, etc.) • Chess culture (famous games, players) famous, historical tournaments etc.)
