About Kj
I am a Classics teacher, tutor and OCR examiner. Until July 2026 I was Classics Lecturer at New College Durham, where I ran the department single-handed and built its A Level courses from the specification up. I hold an MA from Durham in and a BA, and I have taught for eight years in schools, sixth forms, colleges and residential summer programmes, tutoring privately alongside since 2018. I am also a published translator, so this material is still something I read for pleasure rather than only for exams. Marking A Level papers for OCR keeps me close to the standard students are judged against, and that feeds directly into how I prepare them. Lessons are planned, punctual and honest: you will always know what we are working on, why, and what to do next. Beginners of any age are as welcome as candidates two months from an exam.

I am a Classics teacher, tutor and OCR examiner. Until July 2026 I was Classics Lecturer and Course Leader at New College Durham, where I ran the department and built the A Level courses from the specification up. I hold an MA from Durham in Classical and Medieval Languages and a BA in English, and I have taught for eight years in schools, sixth forms, colleges and residential summer programmes, alongside private tutoring since 2018. I am also a published translator and run a literary magazine.
My lessons consist of short, specific tasks of ten to fifteen minutes, a shared set of notes that grows into a revision file, and feedback that says what to do next rather than only what went wrong. I am happy to keep parents briefly updated where that helps.
Most lessons are 60 minutes, weekly. Forty-five minutes suits younger pupils and 11+ candidates; 90 minutes works well for A Level unseen practice and for intensive blocks before exams. Lessons are online, with texts annotated live on a shared screen, or in person in and around Salisbury.
Latin, Classical Greek, Classical Civilisation and Ancient History from GCSE to A Level (OCR, Eduqas, Cambridge International), plus English and Religious Studies. Also complete beginners of any age, including adults returning to Latin; 11+, 13+, Common Entrance and scholarship candidates; home-educated pupils; students whose schools do not offer Classics; retakes; and undergraduates working on set texts and unseens. Having worked as an Assistant SENCo and in speech and language support, I adapt readily for pupils with SEND or additional language needs.
No prior Latin is needed to start, and nobody is ever too far behind to catch up. Tell me the exam board, the deadline and what is going wrong at the moment, and I will tell you honestly whether I can help and roughly how long it will take.
