About Ozioma

I learnt how to weave cornrows at the age of 8 back home in Nigeria and have always styled my children's hair from a very young age as well as braid my own hair myself. I am a former high school teacher but been self-employed as a hairdresser since 2012. I started haireducation in 2018, attending to clients with 3 and 4 hair types in the Afro-Caribbean community . My skill set ranges from simple cornrows to complex patterns, weaving cornrows with extensions, braids, twists, locs, wigs, hair pieces to product knowledge and formulation (2022).

About the lesson

I demonstrate very carefully, proper hand coordination and positioning to make braiding and weaving cornrows easier to achieve very neat pain-free hairstyles especially for kids. Structured courses range from 10 hours and above depending on your skill and experience. Contents include simple cornrows, complex cornrows with different shapes/patterns, regular, knotless and passion/boho braids, twists, crochet weaves/braids, starter locs and retie, cornrows with extensions. No skills or previous experience necessary because you will learn these skills from scratch. I start from the very beginning and meet you where you are at. No pressure. I cover theory and practical aspects of natural Afro textured hair including basic to advanced natural hair care, also exhibit vast and extensive product knowledge for haircare . You acquire lifetime skills to care for your hair, family and friends, start a hair braiding business or change your career.

Emma was very pleasant to teach, she took to instructions very carefuly, asked questions at every stage to ensure she had a good understanding of what she will do later on and went on that very day to practice, hands on, no delays and sent me the pictures to inspect. To my delight she is doing extremely well especially as she had no previous experience.

Umi's determination is her strength and is working extremely hard to achieve her goal of weaving perfect and neat cornrows. She took to the skill like fish to water and is very excited with she has achieved. She can weave neat cornrows with her eyes closed and was amazed during the session.

How long have you been interested in the field of well-being and are you practicing?
I have been passionate about well-being for over 2 decades and as a practicing roman catholic, my faith plays a huge major role in the upbringing of my children, attending and providing a service to clients by respecting their dignity and self worth. It goes beyond hairdressing but also a vocation.
Tell us what your discipline can bring to people's lives.
Treating one's own hair with care, respect and education makes it very easy for me to offer my service to people, helping them to boost their confidence and care for their hair wiith ease.
Could you provide some instant top tips to help us feel good in body and mind?
Practice staying silent for a few minutes each day to try and be in God’s prescence, stay consistently hydrated, eat healthy, get enough rest, stretch/exercise/take walks regularly and avoid stress.
How would you describe your method as a practitioner?
As a hairdresser, I use consultation, assessment, patience, education and knowledge of afro textured hair to deliver adequate results to both clients and students/learners.
With experience, are there things you have learned or unlearned about yourself or others?
I have learned that teaching and styling afro textured requires patience, active listening, and adaptability, as every client and student learns or communicates differently. What I have unlearned: I have unlearned being too hasty and to accept I am not a nice person but kind 🙂.
Do you have a role model, a person who really inspired you?
My role model is the virtuous woman who symbolises wisdom, noble character and Godliness in her daily life.
How do you personally relax; what methods work for you?
I pray and meditate on my rosary, read scripture, attend mass and blessed sacrament, listen to rnb music, meet up with friends and crochet watching movies.
Tell us about a memorable lesson
I never thought I would actually take hairdressing up as a career when I was younger but having my children and taught in high school, it was a tedious workload I left the high school environment but I thank God He gave me another pathway to teach because I love teaching and making an impact.
