About Syed

I have over 20 years of experience working as a faculty member in quantitative methods, econometrics, and statistics. In addition, I have vast experience in research supervision, including roles as thesis supervisor, senior research fellow, coordinator of research, consultant on contractual projects, and author. I also completed over 750 hours of teaching and consulting through the Superprof portal. I am humbled by the confidence of students (from the University of Oxford, The University of Chicago (Booth), McGill University, LSE, The Smith School of Business at Queen’s University, and others) and professionals (including an international development professional researcher at UNCDF, the Managing Director at National Standard Finance (NSF), senior advisors in government-affiliated institutions, a research fellow at Imperial College London, a visiting scholar at Harvard University, and many more), who sought guidance and wrote lovely reviews for me.

Following are elaborations on how I approach and formulate my teaching preferences: Choosing among alternative quantitative methods: how to make a choice among tools of quantitative research including the case for game theory, mathematics of optimization, use of descriptive and inferential statistics, and in form of the application of econometric modeling. Early assessment of making methodological choices: As part of traditional and contemporary research, the use of some quantitative methods may be considered conventional, while the application of some quantitative tools may be considered to have higher academic value. It is important for students and researchers to differentiate between conventional and creative tools for the analysis of the data. It is interesting to note that gaps in research may also be used by devising better and more creative tools, in the application. Domains of application: Tools of game theory, application of statistics, use of the tools of mathematics of optimization, and econometric modeling all have potential usefulness in different subjects such as Business administration, Economics, Sociology, Psychology, Political Science, Media studies, Education, and Medical Sciences. Emphasis on interpreting findings and results: while evaluating existing literature and in order to use quantitative tools for the analysis of the data indigenously, it is imperative to assess the theoretical and empirical relevance of results, and how to plan for further improvement in estimates. Regardless of your preferences for qualitative research, doing quantitative research and the ability to evaluate quantitative works should not be a limitation/inability, for persons who have their full career ahead. Supplementary note: In addition to regular discussion, explanation, and interpretation during the online meeting, I utilize the graphical tablet for taking notes, making graphs, writing equations, etc, and screen sharing options, so that you get the similar feel of a live classroom. At the end of the lesson, I am used to sending the file of my notes to you, so that during the session one can fully concentrate on the discussion.

The mentioned hourly fee is for discussion on regular course lessons, following a course outline.

For guidance in research projects, theses, troubleshooting with the data analysis, or discussion on past examination papers, I will duly communicate the hourly fee.

For effective and contextual guidance, if you feel that I should review your documents—the project or the thesis write-up, data sets, past examination papers, etc.—we can mutually agree on the time that I would need for reviewing purposes, and then we can plan to meet.
