About Tom
I graduated from the University of Leeds in 2022 with a bachelor's in music performance with honours for classical saxophone. Since then I have regularly performed as a professional in recitals and have been teaching in a school for two years. I have taught classroom music to years 4 - 9 as well as music theory and aural up to grade 8. My past students have a 100% pass rate for theory exams and have unanimously agreed that their understanding of music theory has made them better musicians! I am also a conductor, and am currently taking a whole year to focus on my conducting studies ahead of a master's degree in conducting. I learn with some of the leading and upcoming professionals, have an assistantship with an orchestra in West Sussex and have guest conducted orchestras all over the south east. I am incredibly passionate about making music opportunities and I am hoping to set up a charity to fund music hub places for students this year! I also enjoy programming, mixed martial arts and adventurous activities, but have a strong disdain for cyclists who ignore red lights. I have a small black cat called Hagrid and my favourite orchestral work is Mahler's Symphony No. 2 "Resurrection".

Hi, I'm Tom and I offer a fast-track, but easy to understand syllabus to take the grade 5 ABRSM music theory exam! Whether you are looking for the qualification to take grade 6+ instrumental exams, for a university entry or simply because you are curious about music theory, you can trust me to help you breeze through the exam. As a conductor I have to know a lot about music, so you can guarantee you are learning from a reliable and knowledgeable tutor. I take a building up and linking approach to teaching that has been proven to be effective in the classroom. I tailor lesson content to what you need and your experience whilst using past ABRSM exam or exam-style questions to ensure you are best prepared to take the theory exam. These lessons can be booked in 30 (£20), 40 (£25) or 60 (£30) minute lessons. My first lesson is a free 30 minute taster, and I spend this time getting to know about your music experience so I understand how to help you the best as well as a sample lesson to get you started.

Great theory tutor! Funny and explains things well. 10/10
Tom has by far been the best theory tutor I’ve ever had. His attentiveness to answering my questions (and ability to sense which questions I’d have before asking) resulted in many productive and satisfying sessions. His patience and sense of humor made it very easy to work through difficult material. We met at a musical event over the summer.
Mr Sangster taught me music theory for two years and took me from complete beginner to passing my grade 5 theory exam so I could take my grade 6 flute. He was very clear, funny and always made our lessons interesting, I would highly recommend him as a music theory teacher!
Tom has been extremely helpful to me in learning music theory! His explanations are easy to understand and he is very reliable.
