Starting 11+ preparation at age 9 allows a steady, pressure-free approach rather than last-minute cramming.

• Year 3 (age 7-8): A gentle introduction that strengthens reading comprehension, vocabulary, and basic arithmetic.
• Year 4 (age 8-9): Introduce exam content, verbal reasoning, and non-verbal reasoning systematically.
• Year 5 (age 9-10): Intensive practice focusing on exam technique, speed, and accuracy under timed conditions.

Every child is different, so consider their confidence level and how competitive your target schools are.

Private 11+ tutoring in Thornton Heath generally runs at about £14/h per session.

The final cost depends on a few key elements:

• The tutor's experience and qualifications (QTS status, exam board knowledge, success rate)
• The competitiveness of your target grammar schools
• Lesson delivery method (one-to-one, small group, online, or in-person)
• How often and how long each session lasts

Some tutors provide a free trial lesson so you can assess their teaching style before committing.

Children sitting the 11 Plus are tested on English, Maths, and two types of reasoning skills.

• English: Tests understanding of texts, vocabulary, sentence structure, and written expression.
• Mathematics: Arithmetic, fractions, percentages, ratios, algebra basics, geometry, and word problems.
• Verbal Reasoning: Word puzzles, synonyms, antonyms, analogies, codes, and logic problems using language.
• Non-Verbal Reasoning: Tests abstract thinking using diagrams, shapes, and visual patterns without words.

Some areas use GL papers while others use CEM, so check which format your target schools require.
