The seven qira'at are authentic readings of the same text, passed down through unbroken chains of transmission.

• The scholar Ibn Mujahid formalised these seven readings in the 10th century, and three more were later added to make ten.
• Two transmitters (ruwat) preserved each reading, so every qira'ah has two narrations.
• The Hafs narration is followed by most printed copies of the Quran, while Warsh is common in North and West Africa.
• The differences involve vowelling, elongation (madd) and some word forms, without contradicting the meaning.

A qualified Quran tutor with an ijazah can explain each riwayah and correct your recitation in real time.

A private Quran lesson in Reading costs approximately £13/h.

This rate varies depending on several factors:

• Where the sessions take place

Many tutors offer package discounts for booking multiple lessons.

Starting the Quran is easier than it looks, as long as you follow the steps in order.

• Letters and sounds come first, including throat letters such as ع and ح that English does not have.
• Short vowels (harakat): fatha, kasra and damma tell you how to voice each letter.
• Tajweed rules such as ghunnah and qalqalah give the recitation its correct sound.
• Short surahs from Juz 'Amma, like Al-Fatiha and Al-Ikhlas, are ideal first passages.

A qualified tutor listens to your recitation and corrects mistakes before they become habits.
