French teachers often name the subjunctive as the hardest tense to master. You use it when statements involve possibility or personal reactions, not certainty.

• Trigger phrases — Words such as "pour que", "avant que", and "à moins que" signal its use.
• Irregular stems — High-frequency verbs have unique subjunctive forms you must memorise.
• Practice tip — Start with fixed expressions and learn them as chunks.

Once you recognise the triggers, the subjunctive becomes more predictable and manageable.

Private French lessons in Cheltenham average £24/h.

This rate can change several factors:

• Your current ability (beginner, intermediate, or advanced)
• Your teacher's background and credentials (years of experience, exam specialisms)
• How often you book and session duration (30-minute, 60-minute, or 90-minute sessions)
• How tuition is delivered (online, at home, or at the tutor's location)

Many tutors offer discounted rates when you book multiple sessions in advance. Quite a few tutors give a free first lesson so you can check the fit before committing.

The Pareto principle means a minority of vocabulary does the majority of communication work.

It encourages efficiency: master the essentials before expanding to rarer terms.

• Core vocabulary — Mastering 2,000 high-frequency words lets you understand most conversations.
• Grammar priorities — Focus on the tenses you will actually use before studying rare literary forms.
• Real-world exposure — Listening to native content reinforces the vocabulary you need most.

Smart prioritisation helps you communicate sooner, which keeps motivation high.
