Everyone has a particular teaching style. For me it is very important to understand the student’s goals (e.g. solve certain type of problems, understand a concept, improve marks, pass an exam, develop your general mathematical thinking, etc). Once we have our goals clear we can agree on a working plan, as short or long as it should be considering the time and expectations that you have.
In the past, I have tutored pupils in 2 ways: by helping them understand concepts they were struggling with in school, and guiding them through questions (often written by myself) until they did not need any help to complete the questions; and I have also taught completely new topics from scratch, in a case where a pupil was taking a higher level examination than his classmates.
