The core German question words are known as W-Fragewörter because they all begin with W.
Advanced learners add Wie? and Woher? to handle most conversational questions.
The typical structure is: W-word + verb + subject, for example "Wo wohnst du?" (Where do you live?).
A private German lesson in Derby usually costs about £20/h.
The final price depends on a few key elements:
Many tutors offer discounted packages for regular bookings, which lowers your per-lesson cost.
Choosing online tuition often reduces costs without sacrificing quality.
German language ability is measured using six CEFR levels: A1, A2, B1, B2, C1 and C2.
Most job requirements in Germany ask for B1 or B2; university study typically requires C1.

Once a year, Derby and her German twin city, Osnabrück, exchange a citizen. For one year, one lucky Derbeian lives in Germany while one Osnabrückian will sojourn in Derby. The idea is to promote awareness of the twinning scheme, as well as educate and inform the citizens of their respective host cities of the joy and wonder of their counterparts.
Besides these individual citizen-ambassadors, Derby's twinning scheme calls for a swap of musical talent. The Derby wind band from John Port Spencer Academy trades places with their sister-school in Germany, the Melle Gymnasium - the German word for college.
Initially meant as a group drama project, it is now also a cultural and information exchange.
Of all the twin town and sister-city relationships around the world - and there are plenty of them, Derby's exchange programme is unique. No other German city partnership engages with their counterpart at such a level and with such consistency. And, in Britain, only one other city receives or sends such an ambassador.
Whether you aim to be a cultural ambassador to Osnabrück or just want to earn decent marks on your GCSE or A-Level German exams, learning how to speak German and/or improving your level of German ability is the way to go.
Thanks to the bounty of technology at our disposal today, German language learners have many options to enrich and diversify their studies. Downloading an app, for example, or listening to German radio via the internet. You can also watch videos and documentaries in German, with German subtitles on for extra reading practice. You could read German newspapers, order books in German...
You could join the Derby German Facebook group, a convivial bunch consisting of native and non-native German speakers who get together about once a month for coffee, cake and conversation - in German, of course.
The bottom line is: you have an embarrassment of riches when it comes to improving your German skills in Derby, compared to other cities in the UK.
But what if you don't speak any German? What if you're an absolute beginner, or you've studied German for a few months and still don't know when to use 'das' or 'daß', nor do you know the difference between 'Man' and 'Mann'?
If you're not in secondary school or college, you'll need some formal language training.
Outside of language learning centres prevalent across the UK, such as Language Trainers and Listen & Learn, you can find language training exclusive to Derby.
One such concern is the Derby Language School, where you can study a host of languages, including German. Their instructors teach individual learners - children and adults and, should there be (up to four) students taking lessons who are at roughly the same level, they will group them into a class to save everyone money.
All of the Derby Language School teachers are native speakers of German with long experience in teaching students from all walks of life. Their personalized attention and dedication to each student's progress are what makes this school so unique.
The Derby Adult Learning Service also offers German language courses at all levels, from absolute beginner to intermediate. As the organization's name implies, these lessons are strictly for adults; they are more oriented toward conversational German - the type of language you'd use on holiday in Germany, rather than business German.
Clearly, there's no lack of venues to learn German but let's present your best option for studying German in Derby.
Taking language lessons from a teaching centre can be pricey because they have to turn a profit to keep their business running. By contrast, Superprof German language tutors put your learning needs ahead of their profits, meaning your lessons will cost a lot less.
They'll also be much more engaging. You'll learn at home, either face-to-face or via webcam, and you get to decide what direction your lessons will take. If you need to focus more on speaking and listening skills, that's the direction your Superprof will take your lessons in.
Cost-effective and targeted: Superprof has the best deal on German lessons in Derby!
