On the harmonica, your breath is the engine because every note comes from blowing out or drawing in.

• Use your diaphragm as the air source so your chest and shoulders stay relaxed.
• Each hole has two notes: a blow note and a draw note. Knowing both helps you plan your air.
• Keep your throat open as if saying "ah" and never suck air hard through the holes.
• Managing surplus air matters because draw-heavy tunes can leave your lungs overfull. A quick exhale through the nose solves this.

One-to-one harmonica lessons help you link breathing, tone and rhythm from your very first songs.

In London, expect to pay about £22/h for a harmonica lesson.

The cost depends on:

• The style you want to learn (blues, folk, rock or chromatic)
• The tutor's experience and qualifications
• The duration and frequency of lessons
• The location where the sessions take place

Most teachers offer a free trial lesson so you can test their approach.

The harmonica is one of the most accessible instruments to start, but it takes time to master.

• Chords come naturally because blowing into the first three holes of a C harmonica already sounds a C major chord.
• Playing single notes cleanly usually takes a few weeks of regular practice with the lips or tongue.
• Bending notes means lowering a pitch by reshaping your mouth and airflow. It is the signature sound of blues harp.
• Harmonica tablature shows each hole number and whether to blow or draw. It makes learning songs simpler than sheet music.

One-to-one lessons turn early progress into solid technique and a growing repertoire of songs.
