Unlike most wind instruments, the harmonica sounds on both the exhale and the inhale.

• Breathe from the diaphragm and let your belly move rather than your shoulders for a fuller tone.
• Blow and draw notes differ in each hole of a 10-hole diatonic harmonica. Exhaling and inhaling give two separate pitches.
• Keep your throat open as if saying "ah" and never suck air hard through the holes.
• Managing surplus air matters because draw-heavy tunes can leave your lungs overfull. A quick exhale through the nose solves this.

A harmonica tutor can spot tension in your breathing and give you exercises for steady and relaxed airflow.

A private harmonica lesson in Newton Le Willows costs approximately .

This rate varies depending on several factors:

• The style you want to learn (blues, folk, rock or chromatic)
• The instructor's credentials and track record
• The package you choose (one-off or regular)
• The teaching mode (in person or by video call)

Most teachers offer a free trial lesson so you can test their approach.

Getting your first sounds out of a harmonica is easy, while advanced techniques need patient practice.

• Chords come naturally because blowing into the first three holes of a C harmonica already sounds a C major chord.
• Single notes are the first real challenge. You isolate one hole with a lip pucker or tongue blocking.
• Bending notes means lowering a pitch by reshaping your mouth and airflow. It is the signature sound of blues harp.
• Harmonica tablature shows each hole number and whether to blow or draw. It makes learning songs simpler than sheet music.

With a teacher's feedback, you master single notes and bends faster than with videos alone.
